CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character's name: Dustfinger
Character's canon: Inkheart
What type of canon is your character from?: Book
Brief history of your character:
Dustfinger was once one of the best fire-eaters in Inkheart, that was until Silvertongue—a man who has the ability to read characters out of their books—read him and two of the books most notorious criminals (Capricorn and Basta) out of their world and into his livingroom, sending his wife to fill their space.
Dustfinger spent 9 years in our world, desperate to get back to his own world--where fairies where real and he could speak to fire—and wife and children. Our world was far too noisy, busy, and bright for the fire-eater, and he was miserable. He begged Silvertongue to return him to his world, but the man did not know how to control the gift. He was also afraid of sending his daughter, Meggie, into the book inadvertently.
Unable to stand it any longer, Dustfinger turned to Capricorn and Basta to return him to his world. Capricorn told the fire-eater that if he led his men to Silvertongue and his copy of the book that he would make sure that Dustfinger was returned to his home. This was, of course, a lie. Capricorns only plan was to have Silvertongue read an old “friend” out of the book—The Shadow. Dustfinger helped Capricorn’s men to capture silvertongue and his daughter.
During his imprisonment in Capricorn’s Village, Silvertongue was forced to read treasure from Treasure Island and One Thousand and One Nights . Instead of piles of treasure, however, a boy named Farid appeared in front of Silvertongue.
Dustfinger, feeling cheated and guilty for tricking Silvertongue and his daughter, broke them and Farid out of the village. Farid took an instant liking to Dustfinger and Gwin—Dustfinger’s tame martin—and stuck to them like glue from then on, no matter how many times Dustfinger tried to get rid of him.
The group ran from Capricorn’s Village together, but soon separated, Dustfinger having decided that he had to try and get a copy of Inkheart from Capricorn. Farid, of course, followed him.
During one of his excursions into the village to visit Resa, a mute maid for whom Dustfinger has a soft spot, the fire-eater manages to get captured by Capricorn. At this time it has become apparent that Meggie can also read characters out of books, and Capricorn decides it is time to read The Shadow out of the book. Dustfinger and Resa were to be the Shadows first victims. Farid, Silvetongue, Fenoglio—the author of Inkheart—and Meggie manage to foil this plan, however, and killed Capricorn and his men.
While Resa, Silvertongue, and Meggie returned to their former lives, Dustfinger and Farid took the last copy of Inkheart and traveled around, searching for someone who has the same gift as Silvertongue and his daughter. They met with very little success until they ran into Orpheus, a man who promised to return Dustfinger back to the book along with Farid.
Brief synopsis of your character's personality:
Dustfinger is a very complex character who often deals with inner conflicts. It is in his nature to be very trusting and loyal, but his quest to return to his home and family often makes him go against his inner instincts and cross those whom he cares about. He tried very hard to keep himself from forming ties in the new world he found himself in, but against his wishes he fell in love with Resa, came to care for Farid as his own son, and even cared for Silvertongue and his daughter to a degree. He knows he will miss these people dearly when he leaves this world.
Dustfinger thinks himself a coward, but in truth he is much braver than anyone suspects him of. His biggest fear is his own death, which he knows to happen toward the end of Inkheart. In the story the fire-eater dies when one of Capricorn’s men try to harm Gwin. The fact that he is destined to die in order save his pet martin’s life is further proof of his pure heart.
Physical Description:
Dustfinger is a tall man with ginger-colored hair that reaches just past his shoulders. He has three pale scars on his left cheek which he has courtesy of Basta, a knife happy man who was angry that Dustfinger had caught the eye of a certain lady.
GAME SPECIFIC INFORMATION
What is the point of your character's canon in which you are introducing your character?:
At this point in the story Orpheus, a man with the ability to send Dustfinger and Farid back into Inkheart, was attempting this feint. Instead of opening his eyes to the pond in the middle of the woods he expected, however, he finds himself in a desert with only one building in sight—the Hotel.
Is your character alive or dead at the point of entry to the game?: Alive
What skills does your character have?: Dustfinger was once able to speak to fire, but these days he is simply a skilled street performer whom happens to know a lot about the way his friend fire behaves. He his nimble and rather agile, allowing him to stand on his hands other acrobatics to amuse the crowds.
When your character is shown to his/her room, he/she will find ten personal items belonging to them, which the Hotel has supplied. These things can ONLY be things they would typically have in canon. This will be known as his/her initial personal inventory. Please list what these things would be:
1. Gwin—a “tame” martin that has horns sticking out of the top of his head. He often bites those who try to get to close.
2. A rather old duffle bag that has more patches and stitches than original fabric. It has endured countless journeys in both the Inkheart world and our world and now will see him through his time at the Hotel.
3. One fire-eaters costume.
4. A worn photograph of Resa, a mute woman who taught Dustfinger how to read.
5. A copy of Inkheart, the book he originated from.
6. A pair of sneakers, hardly worn, that belonged to Farid.
7. One hand-written page which was meant to return him to his story.
8. A knife belonging to his long time enemy, Basta.
9. A bottle of flammable liquid which Dustfinger uses to make fire do his bidding in our world.
10. A set of rubber balls to juggle.
Disclaimer: Dustfinger, Farid, Resa, Gwin, and anyone else mentioned on this page do not, sadly, belong to me. They are the genius work of Cornelia Funke.
